Flute Making
By Marty Lisonbee of Native Echo Flutes
Friday 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
This flute making workshop is being offered by Marty Lisonbee of Native Echo Flutes. Marty will provide flute blanks that will accommodate making a flute in the key of A, G or F# or F. You may also opt to build an E or D flute for an extra $25. The E has a 1" bore and the D a 1 1/8" bore. These flute blanks feature a solid piece of wood, line bored to maintain a single piece flute body. Then your flute blank's basic shape is turned on a lathe, providing...near perfect symmetry and wall thickness, important elements of building a high quality flute. Then Marty will share with you techniques of constructing a flute that will provide you a clean, clear sound with good volume. A basic Cedar blank is included in the tuition, but this year participants can also opt to upgrade ... to a premium wood ... with burned inlay, turquoise inlace inlay or real turquoise inlay. Also learn and create a natural edge on the end of your flute. These premium blanks will be available on a first come, first serve basis. The addition payment for these blanks will be made at the workshop. At the end of this workshop, participants will take home a high quality flute at a fraction of the price of buying one, not to mention the skills needed to make your next flute. This year an additional instructor will also be available to assist students with questions and assistance. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Clint Goss Bio, Manifest Spirit Recording Artist
Clint began playing the clarinet 30 years ago. His encounter with a Native American flute made by Kai Mayberger of White Raven Drums re-connected him with music. In 1997, Clint and his wife Vera traveled to Zimbabwe on a technical assistance project, and were infused with the music that is ever-present in that culture. The musical landscape broadened and Clint began jamming on the African Kalimba. Since then, Clint and Vera have undertaken extended projects and trips in Calcutta, Tokyo, Zimbabwe, Bulgaria, Namibia, South Africa, Moscow, Kenya, Egypt, Jordan, and China. Each trip has widened the musical universe and brought more sounds into the mix.

Infused with the core philosophy of improvisation from the Native Flute culture, Clint connected with the Music for People organization led by Grammy nominee David Darling. He has studied music facilitation with them for the past three years, and plans to complete the full four-year Music Leadership Program in June 2007.

In addition to Native American Flutes, Clint now performs on Indian Bansuri, African Kalimba, Slovakian Fujara, Indian Shruti box and Tamboura, Swiss Hang, and a variety of world percussion instruments including African Djembe and Udu. His improvised performances weave rhythms and melodies from many musical heritages to create music that is deeply respectful of the cultures that created the instruments he plays.

Clint's first commercial CD release, SpiritGrass, with Eric Miller was released in September 2006.

Bridging The Gap - Intermediate To Advanced Level Players' Workshop
By Jan Seiden
Friday 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm
“Bridging the Gap” is designed to help Native American flute players of various backgrounds and playing proficiencies learn solid technique and creative approaches to playing. Participants gain tools to help you move beyond blocks to playing at higher levels. This workshop helps players achieve a more elegant way of playing through a better understanding of how to integrate your spiritual expression with the practical mechanics of flute playing.

Take your playing to a new level by learning the technique behind the techniques! What makes some people sound so much better than others? There is often something intangible but very present. Strengthen your playing with those elusive fundamental concepts that make us wonder why some players sound so good. Learn how to create effect with tonguing, breath control and fingering techniques. By incorporating elements of “sacred breath” into your playing we begin to hear the synergistic expression of spiritual connection with elegant technique.

Build your confidence playing in front of others through building confidence in yourself. It all begins with your relationship with the flute and yourself.

Is an “intermediate level” class right for you? In a way, we are always intermediate players – playing between how we played a moment ago and how we will play in the next moment. We are always learning new techniques and refining the ones we’ve been introduced to. This workshop is designed to help players reach their next level – it provides the technique and approach intermediate to your next higher level of playing.

Each day is a day to celebrate through song!

Recommended flutes: A or E minor, although any flute will do. Suggested foundation: comfortable familiarity with the flute and basic pentatonic minor scale, playing basic songs. Passion for playing. No requirement for any fancy playing!

In this variation, students who are interested in playing for the class are encouraged to present short prepared pieces that they would like help to develop or fine-tune. We’ll work on constructive ways to extend technique and look at how to get the most out of our music through phrasing, breath control, and other tools. This workshop is highly interactive and is very educational to those who are playing for the class and to those who are observing. There is no requirement to play for the class. Open discussion is encouraged. Cornell’s expertise gives plenty of hands-on learning opportunity while his light-hearted approach puts students at ease.
